I myself wondered in the 70's why the picture quality was so mediocre right in the movie theatre! Now we all know why.
So even in the theatre, one did NOT get to see the full picture that was filmed. Then to add insult to injury, when Let It Be was released in the 's on Beta and VHS videotape and on Laserdisc all in standard TV 4x3 format , the manufacturers did NOT go back to the original 16mm film that was shot in the same format.
For anyone that saw the film in the theatres in the 70's, it is great now to be able to see the original theatrical release, in stereo AND in much improved quality, including clearer picture and more natural colours, the absolute best version you can find of this release.

Despite tensions, they still created some of their best works as shown on the Naked remix of Let It Be, stripped of the Phil Specter influence.
I'd heard Paul described as a jerk in this film, yet I can relate to his being upbeat and excited about the job at hand, however unpleasant the circumstances.

Sure the first segment filmed basically in a warehouse wasn't too cheery. I never saw the tiff between Paul and George being such a big a deal until others including Paul etc I was kinda seeing Paul as the Leader of the group vs.
Paul had ideas of how he wanted his songs to go and George wasn't cutting it there. Another song Paul is telling John how he wants a guitar part to go and John doesn't have any problem with it.

The film, which was shot in January , was originally intended to be a TV special called Get Back featuring the group rehearsing for their first live show in over two years.
The early rehearsals captured the group, along with John Lennon's soon-to-be wife Yoko Ono, clearly bored, with only Paul McCartney showing any real enthusiasm for the new material.
The first part of the film shows the strain of the early morning sessions held in a cavernous soundstage at London's Twickenham film studios.
Producer George Martin recalled in The Beatles Anthology that the Let It Be project held great promise in the beginning: "They were going through a very, very revolutionary period at that time.
And they were trying to think of something new. They did actually come up with a very good idea, which I thought was well worth working on; The wanted to write an album completely and rehearse it and then perform it in front of a large audience -- and for that to be a live album of new material.
And we started rehearsing down at Twickenham film studios, and I went along with them. I suppose kinda like they do these days on Unplugged, except, y'know, it wasn't to be unplugged.
It was to do a live album. In John Lennon recalled the nearly month-long film shoot saying: "It was just a dreadful, dreadful feeling being filmed all the time.
I just wanted them to go away. And we'd be there at eight in the morning and you couldn't make music at eight in the morning, or 10, or whatever it was.
Reviews for the film, which was released a month after the group's breakup, were mixed, citing the sluggish and depressing nature of the film, as well as director Michael Lindsay-Hogg's sloppy editorial choices.
But across the board, both critics and fans agreed on the power of the group's triumphant rooftop set. Y'know, even before they assembled in January, the idea was, 'Let's get back to playing as a live band' -- pretty good idea.
But then it was, 'Let's make it an album and a film, and we're going to make the album a film of us doing a concert of songs we've never recorded before.
And then you're recording it -- the comparison I made in the book is kind of Nixon's 'The Watergate Tapes,' you have no idea that this stuff is going to comeback to haunt you forever.
But, what made it worthwhile was the rooftop, y'know? Because when I left that theater, I was this far off the ground.
Despite the fact that we knew everything that happened afterward. Yeah, that saves the film. He recalled prior to the lunchtime gig walking in on the four Beatles who were using one of the Apple offices as a makeshift dressing room: "It was like walking in on a band, a nervous bunch of guys getting ready to do an audition.
I don't know if it's because they hadn't played together, or whether they were trying to put the set together, but it was one of those kind of tense things where they were nervous.
When we locked the doors upstairs, and the minute they started playing -- and y'know all the. It's like it all went away and I really believe in my mind that they forgot everything and they were what they were.
They were the Beatles. Let It Be is a filmed documentary of the Beatles rehearsing and recording their new album in The film culminated with a concert by the group set on the rooftop on their own Apple office building in London's west end.
Paul McCartney's concept for the album and film was that it wasn't going to have studio trickery like overdubs and effects. It was "back to the roots" with the Beatles performing the songs in a natural way.
The film and it's accompanying soundtrack was delayed while the Beatles recorded and released their final album "Abbey Road".
Michael Lindsay-Hogg was hired as the director, having previously worked with the Beatles on promotional films for " Paperback Writer ", " Rain ", " Hey Jude " and " Revolution ".
The Beatles assembled at Twickenham Film Studios on 2 January , accompanied by the film crew, and began rehearsing.
We had two cameras and just about did the same thing. The sessions were later described by Harrison as "the low of all-time" and by Lennon as "hell The problem with that was I had bonded or was developing a relationship with George, exclusive of them.
I think it fitted a need of his and mine, that he could elevate himself by having this guy that could be like a gunslinger to them. Lennon would use my name every now and then for clout, as if I was the fastest gun.
So, I don't think I could have been brought into the whole thing because I was too much a mate of George's. At a meeting on 15 January, Harrison agreed to return with the conditions that elaborate concert plans be dropped and that work would resume at Apple's new recording studio.
At this point, with the concert broadcast idea abandoned, it was decided that the footage being shot would be used to make a feature film.
Having this fifth person was just enough to cut the ice that we'd created among ourselves. During the sessions, the Beatles played many songs that were not featured in the film.
The group also experimented with some of their previous songs " Love Me Do ," " Help! Trying to come up with a conclusion for the film, it was suggested that the band play an unannounced lunchtime concert on the roof of the Apple building.
On 30 January, the Beatles and Preston played on the rooftop in the cold wind for 42 minutes, about half of which ended up in the film.
The Beatles started with a rehearsal of "Get Back," then played the five songs which are shown in the film. After repeating "I've Got a Feeling" and "Don't Let Me Down," takes which were left out of the film, the Beatles are shown in the film closing with another pass at "Get Back" as the police arrive to shut down the show.
On the 31st, the last day of filming and recording, the Beatles reconvened in the Apple building's basement studio.
They played complete performances of "Two of Us," "The Long and Winding Road," and "Let It Be," which were included in the film as the end of the Apple studio segment, before the closing rooftop segment.
A rough cut of the movie was screened for the Beatles on 20 July Lindsay-Hogg recalled that the rough cut was about an hour longer than the released version: "There was much more stuff of John and Yoko, and the other three didn't really think that was appropriate because they wanted to make it a 'nicer' movie.
They didn't want to have a lot of the dirty laundry, so a lot of it was cut down. He also retained the scene that he described as "the back of Paul's head as he's yammering on and John looks like he's about to die from boredom.
In early it was decided to change the planned name of the film and the associated album from Get Back to Let It Be , matching the group's March single release.
To create the wider theatrical aspect ratio, the top and bottom of the frame was cropped, necessitating the repositioning of every single shot for optimal picture composition.
While the album Let It Be contains many of the song titles featured in the film, in most cases they are different performances. The film has additional songs not included on the album.
The following songs are listed in the order of their first appearance, with songwriting credited to Lennon—McCartney except where noted.
The world premiere of the film was in New York City on 13 May None of the Beatles attended any of the premieres. The soundtrack also won a Grammy for " Best Original Score ".
They mistakenly overlooked Starr's writing credit on the song "Dig It". Initial reviews were generally unfavourable; the British press were especially critical, with The Sunday Telegraph commenting that "it is only incidentally that we glimpse anything about their real characters—the way in which music now seems to be the only unifying force holding them together, and the way Paul McCartney chatters incessantly even when, it seems, none of the others are listening.
Later reviews were more favourable, although rarely glowing, as the historical significance of the film's content factored into critics' assessments.
Leonard Maltin rated the film as 3 out of 4 stars, calling it "uneven" and "draggy", but "rescued" by the Beatles' music.
It is important viewing for all music fans. Lindsay-Hogg told Entertainment Weekly in that reception to Let It Be within the Beatles camp was "mixed"; he believes McCartney and Lennon both liked the film, while Harrison disliked it because "it represented a time in his life when he was unhappy It was a time when he very much was trying to get out from under the thumb of Lennon—McCartney.
The lack of availability has prompted considerable bootlegging of the film, first on VHS and later on DVD, derived from copies of the early s releases.
These versions were not the same transfer as the U. Naked , including a second DVD of bonus material, but never materialised.
When we got halfway through restoring it, we looked at the outtakes and realised: this stuff is still controversial.
It raised a lot of old issues. The two were concerned about the effect on the band's "global brand Neither Paul nor Ringo would feel comfortable publicising a film showing the Beatles getting on each other's nerves There's all sorts of extra footage showing more squabbles but it's questionable if the film will ever see a reissue during Paul and Ringo's lifetime.
