March 20, Full Review…. View All Critic Reviews Mar 31, Easily the best adaptation of Barker's story since Hellraiser, Midnight Meat Train combined the talent of Cooper with director Kitamura to create a truly scary experience.
The violence was rather campy in the film, the CGI was also excessive, but there were some truly amazing camera-works rarely seen in films these days to balance the short comings.
Sylvester K Super Reviewer. Nov 25, Insanely beautiful and beautifully insane. One of the better horror films I've seen come out in the past couple of years, finally a new suspense thriller that's worth watching.
Most certainly not flawless, but totally awesome. The gore is fantastic with the exception of the one or two CGI parts and the cinematography fucking blew me away.
The acting was solid although some of the characters were a tad annoying, not that there were many of them though. Seriously, there was only about six characters all up and most of them don't do a lot of talking.
Vinnie Jones as Mahogany above was a brilliant choice, and Bradley Cooper gave a crazy good portrayal of Leon Kaufman. I'm sure that the films climax would be difficult for a lot of people to swallow, and I'd be pretty inclined to agree with them.
There's a few things that aren't really explained and a few more that just weren't explained that great, but all in all I was wholeheartedly impressed with Meat Train.
The gore would be too much for a lot of people to handle, but don't assume that due to the name it's a splatter fest. It's a great production of Clive Barker's mentally harrowing work, the psychological aspect of a film will always outweigh blood and guts in my mind, providing it's done well, which Meat Train most certainly does.
Gimly M Super Reviewer. Aside from the CG concerns, I found the movie more likable than unlikable. Leon is a cool lead, his girlfriend is lovable and his friend is a good friend archetype.
The butcher, Mahogany -- Vinnie Jones -- is a good choice for a killer, with a good actor. Jones showed his horror mettle in "Tooth and Nail", but I think he really comes out here with full power, looking very dapper in his suit.
Those who dislike mysteries may be left unfulfilled after this one. While it's a pretty straightforward tale, even after the supernatural elements start showing up, some aspects remain unanswered.
I probably can't get into all of them now without spoiling the film, but I can speak of one: the objects in Mahogany's medicine cabinet are never explained.
I have my own theory on what they are, but I could be wrong the short story never touches on this. I don't know if this is a film you need to see.
Once it goes to video, it may be more likely to be a second or third choice. As of early August, it is the only horror film in theaters and therefore a must-see for those who crave a horror experience in the theaters.
But by next week, "Mirrors" is coming and will probably overshadow this one. I would like to scold the marketing people for keeping the publicity low, not releasing it to the main theaters, and more or less letting it die.
This is not a blockbuster, but it's better than most of that straight-to-video fare. By not giving it a fair showing in theaters, you have sealed its fate.

External Reviews. Metacritic Reviews. Photo Gallery. DVD and Blu-ray releases followed on July The site's consensus states: "A creative and energetic adaptation of a Clive Barker short story, with enough scares and thrills to be a potential cult classic.
There's an energy to the film's final 10 minutes that's unmatched in recent horror films, and Kitamura's penchant for hard-hitting action, while suitably controlled, is always just below the surface.
Overall, The Midnight Meat Train is a simple, bloody, hardcore offering certain to satisfy fans of the genre. It's visually engrossing, the acting and story are mostly solid, and it has a great lead villain in Vinnie Jones.
It only falters in an illogical last act. No matter. The gore factor is selling point to the genre crowd, and they don't have to worry.
No punches are pulled. If this is the kind of quality material that Kitamura's going to deliver in Hollywood, I hope he stays there.
Cinematical called the film "easily the best Clive Barker adaptation since the first Hellraiser film," saying that "screenwriter Jeff Buhler manages to maintain the sly sense of dread that permeates the best of Barker's horror tales.
